Community Meeting 18 Sept at 6pm
Food! Child Minding! Take Action!
Dear friends and comrades!
We are hard at work here at the Arms Embargo NL headquarters planning our next event, but sadly we have had to postpone it just slightly.
We will now hold the Community Meeting on Thursday October 18th, 2025, at 6pm. The meeting will be held at The Lantern, 35 Barnes Rd in St John’s.
We will have a nice Palestinian meal prepared by our local amazing chef Abed, so we are asking people to consider RSVPing by replying to this email so that we will have a sense of numbers. RSVPs not necessary to attend!
This meeting will be much more participatory than the Townhall. We will have a brief opening giving an overview of our work of late, and we will explain the layout of the meeting. We will share some food and have ample time for talking and sharing of ideas
We will then have thematic tables set up so that people can choose the type of work or action they are interested in and then we will get to work.
The themes we will have people work on are:
FLOTILLA SUPPORT
Three members of our community, and three amazing organizers, have left NL and are headed to Gaza with the flotilla on the Women’s Boat. We are working hard to support them and to use the energy and media from their voyage to spur on our own organizing and get more people involved. This table will work on efforts already underway and brainstorm new ways to support our friends on the flotilla and bring their message of an arms embargo, end to the siege, and end to the genocide loudly home.
LETTER-WRITING CAMPAIGNS
We will have a table dedicated to pursuing letter writing and phone zap organizing. We are hoping to get more and more and more people to flood the mailboxes and voicemails of our elected representatives both at the federal, provincial, and municipal level, to do all they can to enforce a two-way arms embargo with Israel, lay sanctions on Israel, and commit to the principles of Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions.
BDS AND THE THURSDAY STRIKE
We will have a table that will be a place to organize around and discuss both BDS at a local level (for example, Sobeys continues to sell produce from Israel) as well as the larger movement. This will also be an opportunity to learn about Thursday Strike actions that have been proposed by Gaza journalist Bisan Owda and develop ways to promote and support it.
CANVASSING
At this table we will have a mini-workshop on canvassing and the development of canvassing materials for people to hand out. Put your knowledge, marketing and design skills, and passion to use to help us get the word out beyond us.
We will end the night with grabbing some fliers and going out to drop some fliers in a few mailboxes in the surrounding neighbourhood. The more people participating the merrier.
As usual, childminding available!
Can’t wait to see you Thursday September 18th at 6pm at the Lantern (35 Barnes Rd)!
With love and solidarity,
Arms Embargo Now St John’s
